We walked along the medieval wall to York Minster. The town is a mix of new and old. There are some quaint streets like Cesky Krumlov, but York is different because despite the historic setting, York feels like a modern town. Cell phone shops, chain stores, and a lot of vehicle traffic makes it seem current.

We started off our afternoon be touring the Minster.I found it superb and inspiring. The stained glass and vaults were spectacular. Touring the crypt area, it was amazing to see the remains of both the Roman basillica and Norman cathedral that once stood on the site. Some of the drainage ditches built by the Romans still function and fulfill their original purpose nearly two millenia later!

We also attended the Evensong service. We were seated in the Choir amid the oak panelling and sacred history of the church. It will likely rank as my highlight of the entire trip. The stained glass windows are also a sight to see. They are doing conserving work on the Great East Window – anticipated completion in 2020. I hope to return to see it!

Dinner was at the Bengal Brasserie. The curry was excellent. Becky got chicken tikka massala, and I got chicken tikka balti. Kingfisher beer was my accompaniament. Pistacchio ice cream for dessert.

We walked by “The Shambles,” but I was let down what had been voted the “prettiest street in Britain.” All in all just too touristy for my taste.

Back in the meal after a glorious day.
